Re: Your last listen
Steve Hackett 'Seconds Out & More' (2022)
The enforced rest gives me the opportunity to get some serious music-time on non-LP sources and a couple of CD releases have come my way recently. Starting with this 2CD / 2DVD box from Hackett's 2021 tour.
The set opens with the mighty 'Clocks' and a selection of Hackett's solo works and then flows into a complete rendition of the entire 'Seconds Out' album which cemented Genesis's superstar status in the 70's. This is a nostalgic feast of recognition and brings a broad smile as one relives familiar joys.
Steve sees himself as 'the keeper of the flame' of the classic Genesis repertoire and the renditions here are respectful and enthralling; this is no cover-band, this is a master paying homage to his own history. The only track that gets a new twist is a light-hearted 'I Know What I Like ' where the band shuffle genres and styles and have some fun.
Hackett left Genesis during the mixing of the original 'Seconds Out' album and his contributions were muted there as a result. Here, his guitar is front-and-centre, and for a man now in his 70's he still fires up the passion and precision, pushing the music to great heights.
Singer Nad Sylvan has a similar timbre to his voice as Phil Collins but doesn't attempt to compete, singing the parts with integrity and honouring the songs.
All-in-all a fantastic album and a trip down memory lane for the faithful.

Re: Your last listen
Saw him a couple of weeks ago performing Foxtrot in full in the second half. The first half show cased his early solo material. When I saw him in 2019 it was Selling England by The Pound in full. He has a great respect for classic early era Genesis. The first time I saw him was in 1978 when the only Genesis song was I know what I like in your wardrobe. I think he wanted to leave Genesis well behind back then. like many who leave major bands. As they get older attitudes change. The cynical would say it is all to do with money.

Re: Your last listen
From what I have read, Hackett is genuinely proud of the Genesis years and feels he has a mission to bring that music to the many fans - of which I am one. All of his 'Genesis Revisited' projects display too much integrity to be mere cash-ins (which is more than I could say for the and-then-there-were-3 bunch).

Re: Your last listen
Very much agree. I did not consider going to see the and then there were three bunch. The Hackett audience nearly entirely comprised Genesis fans from the 70s era. It seemed like an old people's convention where todays Phil Collins would not have looked out of place. Was easy to be first at the bar at the interval.Fretless wrote: ↑Fri Sep 23, 2022 11:22 am From what I have read, Hackett is genuinely proud of the Genesis years and feels he has a mission to bring that music to the many fans - of which I am one.
