This cover is not only brilliant, but it's also actually achieved "iconic" status.

A lot of people didn't realise what you could see if you turned the Boston spaceship upside down. It became clearer on some of their other albums. Once you see it, you'll never unsee it. ;)

Image

Greg Hildebrandt is better known as an illustrator who produced a lot of sci-fi (Star Wars, Star Trek) and fantasy art, but his work has turned up on the odd album cover too.

This piece - The Crucifers - was created long before Ozzy and the band used it on "Mob Rules," which sort of destroyed all the associated rampant rumours of cryptic messages on the cover.

Rick Griffin is another of my favourites, and I came to him through album covers like The Dead's "Aoxomoxoa". He's also the guy who designed Rolling Stone magazine's original iconic logo font and was king of the sixties/seventies psychedelic posters too.

Oops, Mob Rules was Sabbath's second album after Ozzy had been booted out. Ronnie James Dio was the vocalist.

Think it is a great cover though, along with the haunting cover of their first album. The girl on the cover of that ground breaking album from 1970 is still around and has received some publicity recently.

Talking Heads: Little Creatures (1985)
This was the band's sixth and best selling album.
The striking cover was created by outsider artist Howard Finster.
Finster also painted the cover for REM's Reckoning album.

Bowie was my idol and I bought the album when it came out during the school lunch break. The cover raised a few eye browse in class when I came back. Not to mention with my parents when I came home. Remember it being a faulty pressing and having to take it back to the shop on a number of occasions.

It is one of my favourite Bowie albums and came out not long after he had achieved mega stardom. He was now taking himself very seriously and the cocaine which was starting to take effect is reflected in the lyrics and the concept. His intake would soon get a lot worse when he was a tax exile in LA and he was lucky to survive.

I had a book of Guy Peelaert's rock artwork. It was much thumbed, and eventually fell to pieces I'm sorry to say. Some of it was fairly outrageous, especially his "Rolling Stones," images.

[EDIT]

I've just found it on Amazon, but I won't be buying another copy. Not at £132.58 I bloody won't.

Ramases - Space Hymns 1971.

I bought this probably soon after it came out based on the cover, fortunately a good choice.
