Re: Your last listen
The Chameleons 'Why Call It Anything?' (2001)
It has taken me a long time to get around to this one - in fact I didn't know it existed until very recently. The Chameleons have always been one of my most revered bands and they split in the early 90's after releasing only 3 albums - all stunning. Then reformed briefly around the turn of the millenium and made one final record before internal disagreements caused another meltdown.
'Why Call it Anything?' lacks the passionate angst of their earlier work and sounds remarkably similar to later releases from (another fave band) Australia's The Church. There is a more pensive and restrained feel here - although their musicianship is still top-notch.
Go out and find 'Script of the Bridge', ' Strange Times' and 'What Does Anything Mean? Basically' (in that order) and if you're still intrigued - get this. Get anything you can by The Church while you're at it and they have a new psychedelic masterwork 'The Hypnogogue' due for imminent release.
Currently in Alt-Rock mode and new CD's from Interpol, Foals and The Slow Readers Club have just come in.

Re: Your last listen
It's also worth tracking down This Never Ending Now, plus either Strip, or Acoustic Sessions which are essentially the same LP with some live stuff tacked onto the latter one.
Likewise The Free Trade Hall Rehearsal, Here Today, Gone Tomorrow and Dreams in Celluloid are good as well.
Definitely a band who could easily have produced a much larger repertoire, it's our loss that they didn't.
PS I see your Alt Rock and raise you some Goth Rock.
Today Bauhaus, currently Singles, was Press the eject..

Re: Your last listen
The new Jethro Tull album, RokFlote. Impressed on first hearing and I would put it in the top half of the extensive Tull catalogue, Norse mythology is good subject matter. Much prefer it to last years Zealot Gene, with more elecric guitar. Good to see Ian Anderson as prolific as fifty years ago after not much activity, by his standards, in recent decades.

See (hear?) what you mean about Blank Planet - very much my kind of thing, which begs the question how did I miss them?Nearlymusical wrote: ↑Thu Apr 20, 2023 6:58 pm Porcupine tree

Re: Your last listen
A fab CD celebrating the famous (in soul circles) mod club in Stoke-on-Trent, which went on to become a seminal Northern Soul all-nighter venue in the early 70s:
This is what it’s all about…Music!
The missus and me have been dancing around the kitchen, having a right laugh with this CD. Feck, sound quality, feck hi-fi!This is what it’s all about…Music!
Somebody’s telling me the latest scandals.

“The Golden Torch Story Revisited” - Various Artists.
Bloody hell…a right Northern soul day today. No spins or backdrops though; it’d be a sure-fire way of visiting the A&E at my age.
Going to have to listen to some prog later this evening for a wind down. Maybe a dose of “The Land of Grey and Pink”
