Interpol 'The Other Side of Make Believe' (2022)



The frustrating thing about Interpol is that they are a band capable of flashes of intense brilliance, but occasionally lapse into mediocre humdrum which has spoilt some of their releases ('Marauder' to name but one) when you know they can do better. Although it doesn't help when their debut 'Turn On The Bright Lights' was a stunning Joy-Division-styled masterpiece that they have never equalled - until now ....

Here we are then on album no. 7 'The Other Side of Make Believe' which has the New-York-based trio setting up shop in London with production duo Alan Moulder and Flood (New Order, U2, Nine Inch Nails, Depeche Mode, Gary Numan, Ministry, Nick Cave, Sigur Rós, The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Smashing Pumpkins, etc. etc.). On paper, this is a match made in heaven - and it works! Playing to their strengths, Interpol go deeper into their introspective, darker side and come up here with a superb slice of melancholic alt-rock.

Moving into the thoughtful territory reserved for groups like The National (new album imminent), Interpol have sculpted here a work that repays repeated listenings as you are slowly submerged into their journey through murky difficulties into a hopeful optimism for the future.

A pleasant surprise.
