Open baffle & Nva

Unread post by Latteman »

Open baffle and Nva- write up on my adventures 😱

It’s been a long road and ‘not too expensive’
The first thing I did was using some drivers and wood I had lying around- sparked my interest
I progressed to doc modded 12” I got from Ant and added a succession of tweeters from seas then fostex horns.
I quickly learnt wings on the baffle really helped sound stage and bass extension.
I looked for more vintage drivers using IMF, Goodmans and audex with various designs- all with very pleasing sound until I compared them to sealed box models- the bas was not extended nor really present - the detail and sound stage were very good and I told myself- “who needs deep bass”.
As time progressed and other equipment changed I realised I needed more- let’s do this properly I thought.
Enter a pair of Lii Audio Lii Song F-15s, I copied the large Betsy as close as my room would allow and added the 12” as a down firing ’sub’.
All was not well, the top end shrill was killing me- I swapped out the Nva amps and speaker cable with some improvements but my quest took me to tone controls- initially a diy Doug Self pre amp then low and behold my saviour arrived- I have reinstalled the Nva power amps and cables- oh joy I have every thing I every need sound wise from these speakers and kit.

WHAT IS MY SAVIOUR I HEAR U ASK???

Quad pre amp I say- more specifically the Quad 34, the extensive adjustment has been amazing.
Anyone else use the quad pre amps- I’ve been looking at the 66 with the remote but don’t want to lose what I have.
Thanks for listening 👍🏼

Cool.

I think Richard would have said that the Quad pre tone controls are blood pressure tablets for the driver. But it's better to take blood pressure tablets than to otherwise have high blood pressure.

I've liked most of the OB speakers that I've heard.

They look great, well done in persevering to get the sound you want.

Really nice project and they are some of the nicest OB speakers I have seen . OB speakers have always held a fascination for me but I think I would look to do a three way active design with DSP to get things smoothed with the room . Sadly I have zero woodwork skills so unless I can team up with some one able to do that part it will have to stay a dream .
