Not sure of it helps, but I did find a wiki article on where instruments fall in terms of the musical spectrum. It might help you judge if it's affecting things too much.
Something ate my last post while I was on hold for the council. A rise (not spike) around middle C often sounds more "live" or "present" and I guess is down to your crossover design. Regardless, if it were my set-up I would be tempted to try some curtains on the edge windows, and moving the speakers at least another foot away from the walls and windows. Rooms are undoubtedly the trickiest component to get right in a HiFi system.

Well I've looked at the data sheet for the driver and it is flatish from 50 to 1000 .there is a slight rise and plateau at 1000 to 4000 and a steep decline thereafter. so by a process of elimination it must be the room/speaker relationship .
