Been thinking about Grado for a while, so grabbed some Allessandro-ms1's for cheap. They're OK, but fatiguing and a bit tinny and thin like a small radio. Vocals are Ok and i don't mind the drum sounds, but really like the upfront presentation and the light weight on my head (compared to LCD2 which is like a helmet and heavy).
They have had two holes vented in the drivers, and I cut the the centre out of the foam pads and put some thin cotton material over the drivers to settle the harshness out a bit, so they have been modded which opened the sound up a bit.
Do I upgrade to RS2e, RS1? Is it worthwhile or am I going to get more of the same? I Iisten to pop/rock.

Re: Grado SR80 Appreciation Thread.
Seriously pleasant model is the SR225. Accuracy and dynamics aplenty but coupled with a musical richness lacking in other Grado's.
For the record, I also have / had the SR80 and SR325.

Re: Grado SR80 Appreciation Thread.
I have the 225. Much weightier than the 60 / 80 / 125. Not really rich, still, but a lot more balanced.
You could try changing the ear cups on the 80s. I've read that can help add weight.

Re: Grado SR80 Appreciation Thread.
Thanks for the replies. i have thought about 225e after reading fretless's comments on them.
Had a spare half hour today and found some 40mm pipe in the shed so quickly made up some 'ms1000's' by blutaking the pipe to the drivers and gluing some old cotton tshirt around the inside, and over the ends with rubber bands, then put the cut out pads back on for comfort
Still have to do some serious listening tonight but holy-moley the cans now have much more body/weight + more detail and separation + layering ie. soundstage, but still have the awesome forward drive and energy, with no thin/shrill highs. I think these will become addictive.
Try this out if you have ms1's

Re: Grado SR80 Appreciation Thread.
Was not my plan to get into haedphones again, used to use them much more than speakers, but this forum pushed me to try some grado's.
With the ms1000 mods, gone is peircing tinny crap highs and replaced with energy. No album sounded like a studio recording, but instead like a gig down the local pub, ms1's did not do that. Still fatiguing after a couple of hour's, but in a different way, like watching a loud gig for a couple of hours, it's still enjoyable, and I physically moved the whole listen it was fun and engaging.
Put on my 701's to compare and they sounded thin, tinny and analytical in comparison (I do have a soft spot for them though).
Still on the fence about Grado, I will give it more time , but MS1000's for beer money aint bad....

Not mine.
There is a lot of info to be found online about modding Grado's.
