I always considered Saga lowest echelon. Stadium-type.
I have the first 3 lps. Don't think much of them. Its light, fun-prog. Pedestrian but not as horrid as , say, Klaatu.

It is not prog it's as simple as that. There no shoving anything in a cubbyhole, Prog is what it is.. The problem on this thread is it's full of People that would not know prog if it hit them in the teeth.

All this hair-splitting is very interesting. It's treating music like a trainspotter classifies trains or a stamp collector categorises stamps. 'Is this really prog, or is it baroque rock, or maybe psychedelia, or krautrock? <Looks up group in 'John Peel's Big Book of Prog'> Ah! I see the group was only formed in 1974, so cannot be truly prog.'

I guess it's mainly a bloke thing, although my elder daughter is just as pernickety about what constitutes 'metal' music, and gets very hoity-toity about groups which are billed as metal on a festival programme, but which in her eyes do not qualify for the metal badge. She nearly fell off her chair when I told her a while back that Led Zeppelin were once classified as 'heavy metal'.

I would hesitate before describing my daughter as a moron. She has more degrees than me, for a kick-off. But I'm not into classifying music, it's either good or bad (i.e. I like it or don't) as far as I'm concerned. I'm sort of anti-OCD; my music's not even arranged alphabetically!

Fair enough. But the trainspotter thing does fascinate me. I was with my boss on Swindon station one day, talking business stuff, when he suddenly rushed over to the other side of the platform, scribbling something into a notebook. When he came back, I asked if he was OK. 'Oh yes', he replied 'I just saw a <particular type of locomotive> and had to make a note of it. Normally you only see them in Scotland'. To me it was just a boring diesel engine, but to him it was tremendously interesting.

In my early teens, I was very briefly 'into' WW2 military history, and got to know a fair bit about the weapons and military vehicles used by the opposing armies. I bought books about them, borrowed other books from the library, made Airfix kits of them, etc etc. Then suddenly, I lost interest in the whole thing and have never given it a thought since.
