I was not aware that thin floor standers had been popular for around fifteen years. Must be the longest hifi blind ally since the flat earth. I have heard a pair of 3K slim floor standers and to say they sound much smaller than cubes is putting it very mildly.savvypaul wrote: ↑Sun Aug 30, 2020 10:18 pm The Cubes certainly sound bigger than the slim floorstanders that have been popular for the last 15 years or so. We had M300s and Cube 1s set up at a local dealer's and then brought in a new £3k multi-driver slim floorstander. They sounded like a much smaller speaker than the cubes.

I heard these a year or two ago and was very impressed by their large, rich soundfield with good detail / definition.

Re: A CLASSIC CONUNDRUM....
They were Spendors and might have been a bit more than £3K. Can't remember how many drivers they had, but they were very thin. The best way of putting it would be to say that they strangled the life out of music I am familiar with. It was at a dealer demonstrating the Mscaler and my system at home sounded a LOT BETTER without the Mscaler than the system at the dealer with it. The amp was a top Rega one and the streamer was a Lema.

Looking on line I think it was probably thd A7, two units and a port at the rear. 3.3K and a glowing review from Hifi Choice.CN211276 wrote: ↑Mon Aug 31, 2020 10:22 amThey were Spendors and might have been a bit more than £3K. Re: A CLASSIC CONUNDRUM....
Just shows how much of today's equipment is over priced. I think the people who buy this stuff live in a completely different universe to us on here. What do they find so appealing to want to buy it ? Flat graphs and recommendations from bearded buffoons who get paid to write some words which may or may not be the truth. How much advertising to Spendor do in the mags ?

They also got a five star review in What HiFi. To my ears compared to my home system, as well as lacking bass depth, the sound stage was restricted, dynamics compressed and vocals were drained of emotion.karatestu wrote: ↑Mon Aug 31, 2020 8:05 pm Just shows how much of today's equipment is over priced. Re: A CLASSIC CONUNDRUM....
Graphs? I doubt it. They are the comfort blankets of failing dealers and flailing forum gurus. What sells slim floorstanders is domestic acceptance and a lack of choice. Most dealers know that slim, ported floorstanders don't sound great...but they sell. I'm told that the tide is starting to turn again, though. Last time I was in a dealer's they were just taking delivery of JBL L100s.karatestu wrote: ↑Mon Aug 31, 2020 8:05 pm Just shows how much of today's equipment is over priced. Re: A CLASSIC CONUNDRUM....
Oh I forgot about domestic acceptance (form before function). Must change speakers because the room decor has changed. They are slightly the wrong shade of wood
If people bought speakers that are suitable for use in close proximity to tne wall then bigger speakers become less intrusive. In fact why baffle step compensate any speaker ? It adds more components to the xover and reduces efficiency Maybe the imaging and sound staging are better for some speakers when further out in the room.
I suspect too many roll over and give in when the other half put their foot down. I'm all for equality so what's good for the goose and all that.

Re: A CLASSIC CONUNDRUM....
I fail to see the WAF appeal of tall thin floor standers. To me they do not look any better than a well designed wider stand mount which will work close to a wall.
