Oh, and by-the-by, please remember that when Johnson next addresses the nation and tells us we have got an "Australia-type" deal, it's another way of saying we have no deal whatsoever. Australia does not have a deal with the EU, despite the fact that they've been working on one since 2018. We will be trading under World Trade Organisation (WTO) rules. We could face paying up to 10% more for cars and up to 30% for cheese, milk and meat, while companies that currently rely on frictionless trade with the EU would probably bugger off to Europe if they haven't already.

Believe it or not, Mongolia and Afghanistan actually have more favourable trade terms with the EU, at least as far as tariffs are concerned, than Australia. The Prime Monster telling us he's chasing a Mongolian deal, or an Afghan deal, doesn't sound quite so prosaic though, does it?

Remember, although Australia and the EU have some reciprocal arrangements there is no deal in place after three years of negotiation. We've had four years to strike a deal already and have got precisely nowhere, other than Liz Truss renegotiating existing deals we had with non-EU countries via our EU membership and achieving parity if we were really lucky, or more likely, a slightly worse deal than the existing one.

Australia has trade deals with countries in close proximity. We will be a leper on the world stage, as well as a laughing stock.

But, from day one, we have held all the cards.

The easiest trade deal in history. Done by lunch.

Johnson is not considering no-deal, he is only dressing up his humiliation as a glorious victory against the odds. The deal will be done. Expect references to Dunkirk, our darkest hour...we fought them on the beaches.

We have not been negotiating, we have been asking the price.

I doubt it. It would infuriate those who put Johnson where he is.

No-deal is meltdown for at least 3 months. No government could stand it. What we are seeing now is a charade to mollify his backbenchers.

The big show stopper is state aid. If the EU is to agree a deal there has to be a level playing field. If there is soveringty goes out the window. This has always been the driving force behind Brexit.

Dynamic alignment over regulation is the bigger stumbling block

A thoughtful article that lays bare the utter stupidity of Johnson and his cohort's.
