There are many sides to Keith Jarrett, as I am currently discovering: the group leader exploring beyond the boundaries of Free Jazz, the intuitive interpreter of standard songs, the spiritual seeker for beauty, the perfectionist delivering his own version of Classical works - and here, in a concert from 1988, we get Jarrett the solo piano improvisor.
He has effectively written the rule-book for modern Jazz improvisation and the 'Koln Concert' is an unavoidable masterpiece. In Paris he starts in a more Classical way with shades of Bach and Debussy creeping in. The main track is a 38-minute journey through melody and mood, very much akin to an impressionist painting.
In comparison to Koln, KJ has a better piano in Paris, is audibly more relaxed and his musical journey is entrancing. The recording is superb. Lovers of fine piano music should give this a listen, along with the wonderful 'Vienna Concert'.
Sadly, Keith Jarrett's performing days are over as a double-stroke in 2018 has left him without the use of his left hand. However his legacy of albums is extensive and he will be an influence on future generations of musicians.
