Steve Hackett 'Please Don't Touch' (1978)

Image

Sunday morning begins with power, grace and majesty. The album that Steve Hackett left Genesis to record (the rest of the band reckoned that the material was too complicated for them). 'Please Don't Touch' is full of beautifully-written songs, driving Rock passages and intricate acoustic workouts.

Hackett himself 'sings' only on the Agatha Christie pastiche 'Carry On Up The Vicarage' and the remaining vocals are provided by guests that include Randy Crawford, Richie Havens and Steve Walsh (of Kansas - some other members of which add intrumental support throughout the record).

A wonderful, accomplished LP that established Hackett as a solo artist and performer in his own right.

Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow (1975) On the original vinyl.
This great platter is one of the very few that survived the silly (with hindsight) purge of my rock and prog records, that I carried out in 1979.

Bloody Punk, soul and 2Tone. Didn’t think it was possible to like all of it. Oh the folly of youth.
Somebody’s telling me the latest scandals.
Somebody’s stepping on my plastic sandals. Joe Jackson (1979)

The result of Blackmore's dislike of the direction Deep Purple were taking. He formed his own band with members of the support band Elf. It was a solid album but the one which followed is a land mark and one of my all time favourites. For Rainbow Rising only Ronnie James Dio remained from Elf. New members included Cozy Powell. With Bain and Carey this was IMO the classic Rainbow line up. But the band was to become a revolving door. Ego clashes and Blackmore's decision to move away from sword and sorcery and become more commercial lead to the departures of Dio and Powel. Good albums and hit singles followed, but it was never quite the same acs early Rainbow.
