Nils Frahm 'All Melody' (2018)

Image

Quite probably one of the finest albums of the last 5 years. Electro/classical innovator Nils Frahm was given control of a recording complex in Berlin, built in the 1950's for a wide range of uses.
Discovering the potential that the various acoustic spaces gave him, he created the 2LP set 'All Melody' with subtle, pulsing electronics, haunting vocals and vibrant instrumentation.
A glorious, atmospheric album that wraps you in a cloud of sonic bliss.

A lot of this 'monotone solo' sort of stuff leaves me cold, but this one seems to have grown on me.

Max Richter 'Infra' (2010)

Johann Johannsson 'Orphee' (2016)

Two albums sharing a mood of ghostly, otherworldly beauty that, when you play them one after the other, leaves you with the sensation that they form a single work.

I am still revelling in the sound of vinyl, it has opened up a whole new level of connection to the soul of the music and is driving me into a search for albums that have evoked a deep emotional reaction in recent years. So, at the moment, the likes of Johannsson, Richter, Frahm and Efterklang are on an intensive playlist here as I struggle to find vinyl copies of, well, just about everything.

Time to turn a record over ...

Dream Theatre - A view from the top of the world

Quite impressed on first hearing. It will appeal to fans but won't win anyone over. Lengthy tracks and solos.
