Catch The Spirit - Mostly Autumn

Takes me back to Trowbridge Folk Festival ( JCB Rock Tent) before the festival folded (not the tent) , the drummer was just out of re-hab they played "Mother Nature" a tour de force - it was one of those sublime moments - one of our girlfriends said the female songstress lead singer had all the men cupped in her hand :o Of course I bought the CD at the back of the the tent - recording quality 5/10 - content 9/10 - I have to put on on now and again - just in case it now sounds like I remember - never quite does it :|

It's been a good week for new releases if you're me 😊 After a break of 4 years Florence is back with Dance Fever and I really enjoyed it. It's got instant attraction but with enough depth to probably stand the test of time.

There's a link below to a thoughtful Guardian interview and the obligatory YouTube link.

I have always been very impressed by Florence, will certainly give the new album a listen.

Something has drawn me back into the convoluted emotional maelstrom that is the music of American alt-rockers The National.

Image

I picked up the LP of their 2007 recording 'Boxer' as a curiosity/nostalgia thing, but find myself constantly mumbling lines from 'Squalor Victoria' and 'Fake Empire' at odd moments. It is just THE album I want to listen to at the moment.

2019's 'I Am Easy To Find' also blew my heartstrings when it came out and although I do have all the intervening albums on CD, somehow they haven't ever had sufficient attention from me.

To remedy this situation, there are now vinyl copies of 'Alligator' (a massive album!), 'High Violet', 'Trouble Will Find Me', 'Sleep Well Beast' and the aforementioned 'I Am Easy To Find' winging their way in my direction.

The problem is that albums I have only ever heard as CD's are missing, I have noticed, a considerable amount of their emotional impact. The music of The National contains so many layers both musically and lyrically, that it feels like hearing them for the first time.

Also on the wants-list for the same reason is Bon Iver's second, eponymous album. I fear this could start to become an expensive voyage but my soul will be all the richer for it.

My favourite used-vinyl webshop is having a clearance sale as preparation for a move to larger premises. Yesterday's post bought in two nice Rush LP's 'Hemispheres' and 'A Farewell to Kings'.

And there are more on the way!

Two all time classics.

Was in the part of the country last week which inspired Coleridge's poem Xanadu is based on.
