Modern Eon ' Fiction Tales' (1981)
By 1981, Punk was morphing into other forms, it had served its purpose in breaking the Rock & Roll establishment wide open and a New Wave of musical exploration was underway: Joy Division/New Order, OMD, Ultravox, The Cure, Comsat Angels, Echo & the Bunnymen, Siouxsie and the Banshees - the list is long and impressive.
Liverpool was generating its own eclectic scene and one of the bands that emerged from there was Modern Eon. Taking their cues from the experimental sounds of Bowie, Eno, Roxy Music, Krautrock and 'Prog' influences and mixing in 'modern' sounds and Post-Punk energy.
Their one album is a gem, a classic of 80's Art-Rock which still sounds fresh and original. They managed to be distinctive in a similar way to Sad Lovers and Giants, TV21 or Random Hold. Despite imploding after a short burst of brilliance, the legacy of 'Fiction Tales' still goes on and my LP copy is much treasured. So, to my delight, Cherry Red have issued a definitive 2CD edition, curated by the original band, which brings the album together with early singles and demos of tracks intended for a second long-player.
Utterly wonderful and essential!
