Broadly defined avant-garde and modern music

Unread post by Anesthetise »

There is a lot of music that surpasses the 'usual stuff' barrier and mixes different styles, genres and creates a different listening atmosphere than the most of the music we used to know. Some people are still not familiar with these, but maybe we can find some people who appreciate it here, or at least some of it :) .
So, to start off:

A mix of dark ambient and jazz:

Shoegaze (guitar wall of sound and dreamy vocals) combined with black metal harshness:
[BBvideo 425,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KjQQgRGWTgI[/BBvideo]

This is called post-metal or atmospheric sludge metal, they are describing themselves as 'metal for astronauts'. Basically very sentimental and atmospheric form of metal with harsh vocals that many people might not accept. Anyway, the sound is very cosmic, matching the song's title.

A strange type of folk with spoken word vocals.

More folk, very punky and uplifting. These guys can always make me smile, in any situation. Good music = emotion affecting, and that's what they are.

Modern deep house, still with these old, rave elements, but for me - more groovy, while saving the specific, deep atmosphere. One of my dreams is to go party in one of these Berlin clubs, as I wasn't born in years when rave was the king, hehe.

Unfortunately, most of that 'true' house/techno musicans are in underground - Berlin, Chicago, Detroit, what you can hear on the internet is like 5% of real fun :P
Some post-rocks, music to stare at the night sky.

Nobody here is interested in modern music? There is a lot of modern=bad mentality propagated by audiophiles I talk to on the internet. And I still can't understand it :snooty:

As the first track from last post was removed. It's one of my favourite house tracks out there.

Well, I'm going to post stuff anyway, unless Richard finally blocks me for making useless threads
More shoegaze, more POPish. Japanese

Contemporary folk band I discovered just today and already one of my favourite, mellow, moody bands.

Why do I want a turntable? Hell, I don't know to be honest... I've got only 7 records. It just seems cool to have music on vinyls. Don't get me wrong, it's just like changing cables around - we can't really say we are 100% sure what are differences between cables, but we still choose some as 'the best'. It adds some ritual to regular listening - putting vinyl on turntable, turning it on, watching it go round and round, cleaning LPs, caring about them... Also, most of the 'good' electronic music is released on vinyls and it's not availble in the internet.

If you like to discover 'new' music as well, feel free to put something up here, so we can all benefit from it :)

Some English psych-folk, I loved the CDs. Do you know anything similar?

OK, more electronic music, because lately I'm really into underground music - lots of listening, reading about different genres' origin, different styles, etc. and most of it is electronics. Anyway... Burial. Not as underground as much stuff I check out lately, but what this dude does is just incredible. Especially on split EPs with Four Tet.

I would sooo love to see him live :)
Also, from now on I will just post links, as the thread is starting to freeze on loading.

Soror Dolorosa. I forgot about this band actually, because I discovered it a while ago, but today I just found it somewhere on my HDD. Some might it consider the music to stare at the night sky, some just another random band, but they are worth checking out. It's cold, really cold. And beautiful.

Les Discrets - a project created by members of Alcest and Amesoeurs and some other guys. What they play is something between dark folk, dreamy shoegaze, tiny bit of harshy guitars and something else that makes it special. If you like it, I really reccomend you checking out the other bands too.
