Urei 6400

I've just bought this Urei 6400 four channel pro-amp for £26.

It looks like a hunk of agricultural junk.

It's heavy.

On powering up, only 3 of the channels switch into ready mode. The 4th channel is showing .68 volts DC across the speaker terminals. Clearly a fault with that one. The other 3 channels measured 0.00, 0.01 and 0.02 volts DC.

The volume pot on channel 1 is scratchy and noisy. Probably needs a clean. Channels 2 and 3 are OK.

Connected it to my £15 Denon DN-C630 CD player and my Linn Saras. Fired it up and it sounds not too bad, with the speakers likely to be the weakest link in the system.

The Urei 6400 wouldn't be suitable for a small room. With the amp close to the listener the cooling fan would be a bit too noisy. Although at least it's a lot quieter than the fan and transformers in my Urei 6290 amps. In a large room the noise from the 6400 is tolerable.

I'll have to see if I can compare this £41 digital source and amplification combination to something a lot more expensive to see how good or indifferent it really is.
