I thought the debate was a close call and intresting, so thought a wee Poll might be good.
One vote only please - but you can change yer mind as often as you want...!!!

It's not fair, I need two votes!
What good is a great recording if it's played through a poor system?
BUT crap recordings played through a great system will still be crap recordings.
I WANT BOTH !!

A crap recording played on a good system *should* still have some merit in the music and I've found in my experience that a properly matched system can bring musical insight out in recordings I'd previously dismissed as not so good. This was one aspect we found in turntable comparisons, lesser models making mincemeat of bad cuts, yet not bringing the full potential out in really good recordings. A good playback system for domestic use (rather than magnified analysis needed in most pro monitor and 'bling' domestic speakers) should be able to bring 'musical' clues out first, and this is something I find NVA gear does with ease.
It's funny you should mention turntables as I find there are far fewer recordings that I simply can't listen to via my TT than when I had the CD.

Close the poll by all means, but not the thread! This about recording vs kit.

I disagree with DSJR quite strongly.

1. All a good system will do to a bad recording is make it sound worse.
2. A good recording through a bad system can sound acceptable.
3. Any Oasis CD (bad recording) sounds fine in the car, but absolutely naff anywhere else.
4. Telarc CD's (good recording) using a simple cross-miked 'you get what there is' approach blow most anything else away.

By the way.... I enjoy this forum and log on each weekday morning as soon as I arrive at work. A merry Christmas to everyone, even you Jammy ya Scots git... and take care on the rigs this winter. Can't be fun out there this time of year.

Strike one ?
