I like the dark red idea, and definitely not a gloss finish. Another colour that might look good, copper/bronze, will you do the stand in black? What colour are the walls where the speakers will be placed?

Just remembered, this is the type of colour I mean, also if you click on the Extreme version, a dark silver is shown, and also if you do the same with X Diamond you can see rocket red, by clicking on the colours the speakers change as if by magic. Most of the colours appear to be gloss finishes which don't look bad, but they are broken up with black.

Walls are cream but the room is soon to have some work done. I can't see the colour changing too much, it may even get painted cream again.

Thanks for that link. They are some interesting looking speakers. The dark silver and rocket red are both quite appealing. I also like the copper colour and gold colour, copper probably being my favourite.

I was going to do the stand in baltic birch ply translam style and just finish it with an oil. There will be a ring of ply wood around each driver and one separating the two steel hemispheres. The plies will be visible like the stand.

This will affect how I finish the spheres but non of this is set in stone yet.

Translam ply construction looks like this. I am eager to get as much wood into them as possible to dilute the sound signature from any one material.

Spheres appeal to me very much, as you can probably tell. Although the cosmetics (and sound) only really need to please me and my family it's good to get feedback from others. Nobody has said they don't like them so far (tempting fate).

I did think about steel legs but I think there is enough steel in this already. Mixing it up a little might be a good thing although I don't have a clue what the sonic signature of these steel spheres will be like. Welding some steel legs on certainly would be the easiest option and cheapest option for me. But to please my wife the mono leg (10cm diameter) will be wood (birch ply translam) and hollow so I can fill it with sand and run the wiring up it.

Things have certainly come together very quickly of late. It took some courage to ditch the cheap doped drivers and use the B&W ones. I put off cutting the holes in the steel hemispheres due to being a bit scared of fooking it up. I can see more steel steel sphere speakers in my future.

Done nowt recently Peter. Having a bit of a break - not even allowing myself to think about it until after Chrimbomas. In the new year I will get back to it. I am buying a router in the next week though and will do some practising before letting myself loose on some decent wood.
