Decision...NVA Phono or amp?

Unread post by Jeff Ferguson »

Hi guys,
I am considering making some changes to my system and was wondering what you guys suggest. I currently am using an Audiomat Phono 1 in MC mode with an Ortofon Jubilee LOMC. My amp is a Modwright KWA 100SE. My preamp is a passive Bent Audio TAP-X which uses an Intact Audio Autoformer made by Dave Slagle. My speakers are Coincident Super Eclipse III's which are 92db and the impedance is nominally 14 ohms, never dropping below 10. I am trying to decide whether I would get more bang for my buck by replacing the Audiomat with a NVA Phono2 or replacing the Modwright amp with a NVA A40 monoblocks?

I have an old AP10 which easily drives the Coincident speakers to very satisfactory levels, hence my reasoning that the A40's would provide more than enough power.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Cheers,
Jeff

A40s and LS5. Remember NVA amps mean NVA cable.

If that is too much then change all the cables over to NVA first. LS6 and SSP2.

Can I ask what is wrong with your present amplifier and phono stage, both would seem a good match for your speakers?

I should imaging like everyone he is searching for more or better music. If NVA turns out not to give him what he wants he sends back for refund.

As someone who had made this decision and does not for the moment own an nva phono amp , my reasoning { rightly or wrongly} was I could see little point in feeding a nva phono signal into a non nva amp. If you want the NVA sound , them I reasoned the amps were the place to start.

OK Daniel I can confirm it's worth running an NVA phono stage with other kit. Depends how good your existing stage is but I think the NVA is hard to beat for the money and will show up some quite expensive products. You don't need to be running NVA pre and power obviously to get the benefit and I think phono stages have a surprisingly large influence on the overall sound of vinyl playback.
