Big (ish) speakers in a small room

Do big speakers work well in a small room ?
To be precise, that would be sealed 3 ways with 12" woofer and above in the average 1920 semi detached living room.
I have only owned as big as small floorstanders with 6.5" bass/mid up until now but they have been either ported or transmission line.

A key issue is placement. Will you have to have them a fair distance from the walls?

No, they can go right back to the wall if they sound ok there. Being fully doc modded, sealed cabs and docs doped drivers i was hoping they will sound ok back to the wall and not too much boom.

It's one of those "it depends". Give it a try.
I've had some properly large speakers in some small rooms. Sounded fine. Seems to help if you're not into modernist minimalist interior design. IE not listening in a small echoey cave.
