Do BBC Internet Radio Streams get turened up at Night?

Unread post by montechristo358 » Thu Jan 03, 2019 9:30 pm

Sitting here listening to Bob Harris Country on my cubettes

I cannot believe how much better it sounds than any other show I have listened to on Radio 2 all day. and yet strangely its reporting as still being a 128K CBR stream

always seems to be the way when they get to the specialist music shows in the early evening

Because specification have nothing to do with music. Only your ears tell you what is good.

Not absolutely sure, but I remember being told by a BBC engineer that each presentation 'team' adds their own compression in the studio - I find Steve Wright's afternoon show the very worst (FM compression is added to what is done further back) and if I'm working when it's on, I switch off. It just might be the evening presenters and their 'studio team' turn the studio compression down or even off. Some sound processing via the Beeb is so bad these days I'm certain it's due to lack of proper training...

Maybe I'm way off here, but I'm constantly surprised right now how much better 'internet radio' sounds than FM, at least during the day..

could well be, in the same way that hi res files sound better by enlarge due to more care being taken at the mastering stage it could well be the specialist shows attract a more capable more interested in music team of sound engineers

really must make the effort to setup the HLS streams and see if further improvement is noticeable

They use less compression so you can hear Bob Harris whispering.

There is no reason apart from it sounds better, we can invent some marketing bullshit for it if you insist on it. What makes you think anyone has the answer, the BBC probably don't know seeing as they have so many ways to feck up the music, probably without the brains or ears to hear it or know it is happening.

People think the BBC are something special, far from it, most continental radio stations do a far better job conveying enjoyable music. Classical listen to Radio Swiss. Pop, prog, rock then the new Radio Paradise streams are better than anything else available ATM.

And yet as a designer you must care why things sound better, am I not allowed the same curiosity?
