It's like a mini Tympani I suppose

A full drum set of different sizes (12.14.16" toms + 22" kick ) might be an interesting sound

As always it's been done before (well almost). These look a bit more bulbous for the fat round sound

My gig on NYE at the Grand Hotel York has been cancelled. Singer and guitarist didn't test positive until yesterday so they can't do it. We have a substitute singer but she has a small baby to look after and there is no reserve guitarist so that's that.

Apparently the Hotel were OK about the news but it looks like their entertainment will now be a disco. I think this covid wave will have ruined a lot of people's Christmas and New Year.

Even a disco isn't allowed over here - no bands, no crowds, no fireworks (hopefully - the whole country is usually like a war zone at midnight).
Maximum 4 guests and social distancing.

Similar here in Wales. The knuckle head clown is out of step with the rest of the UK and Europe. Retaining his position when under pressure from back benchers is all that matters to him. I just hope that it does not result in a total lock down next month and a similar situation to last year. Having some freedom is far better than having none for months on end.

I agree that these things shouldn't be allowed to go ahead and I was secretly hoping the venue would have to pull it. Luckily they are not going to get arsey about the contract we had so it's a relief. I'm glad I don't have to go anywhere and anyway, I might still be testing positive on the 31st.

Well I'm going to go practice the songs on my sons electro kit before I go mad with boredom and looking at shite on the Internet.

It's funny what happens when you are practicing. Many songs have been written in some of the bands I have been in by me coming up with a drum part and the rest of the song gets written around it. Only works when the main song writer is not some sort of prima Donna control freak - and there are quite a few of them around

Yeah but drum beats in popular music all sound the same I hear you cry. To some extent that is true and they are usually a slight variation on a common theme. When songs are written around a drum part then I often find the drums are much more interesting and unusual.

Below is a video I took of a part I came up with whilst practicing and deliberately trying to use my left hand as much as possible. If you are a right handed drummer then the left gets used much less, is considerably weaker and slower and generally limits your playing somewhat. I decided as an exercise to use my left for hi hat and snare which freed up my right arm to do other stuff. This part may sound a bit tribal with my right constantly on the floor toms but the kick drum is what makes it for me. If you listen to it on a phone you won't hear thd kick drum.

Sent this to my bass player best friend for him to come up with a bass line.

That's a really hypnotic groove, Stu. Would be a nice basis for something that starts off quiet and menacing, then builds up into a sort of Dervish freak-out.

Many Police songs were written around Stuart Copeland's drum parts - he used to complain that after he had come up with the original rhythm then the other 2 wouldn't let him change anything.
