How many times have we all been told "It's great" only to discover it was in fact shit !!!
And Visa versa.
The OP is asking for reviews...and you are the OP.

The only reviews that I really trust these days are those of purchasers on Amazon. Real people with real opinions - both positive and negative.

Simon Winder's trilogy of books about European history ('Germania', 'Danubia' and 'Lotharingia') are excellent (and very funny at times). They illustrate over and over again how often history is a result of cock-up rather than conspiracy.

The OP was asking for recommendations not reviews.

A recommendation is, implicitly, a (positive) review.

Anyway, I recommend...

Just about anything by Benjamin Myers, if you aren't faint-hearted. Particularly if you like a Yorkshire or North East atmosphere. 'Pig Iron' probably a good way in.

I've just read and enjoyed David Lagercrantz's "Fall of Man in Wilmslow," which is about Alan Turing's suicide, and the young Detective Constable tasked with investigating it. It's much more involved than that and goes into Turing's (true) background and DC Corell's (fictional) background, and neatly meshes the two.

I'm moving on to the same author's continuation of Steig Larsson's "Millennium" trilogy next.

Just read the first of Mick Herron's 'Jackson Lamb' books (of which there are five in total) and immediately bought the next two. Slow Horses is the first. Spy novels/thrillers which have a wry sense of humour and a cast of intriguing and engaging characters. The first was really well reviewed and regarded and subsequent ones drew even more positive comments and reviews. I'm looking forward to reading them myself.
