Gervase, the chef, and Hans, the pot washer, are busy in the kitchen of a seafood restaurant.

A waiter enters and shouts over the counter, "One Squid". Then he looks at the contents of the squid tank. One solitary green squid with strange follicles around its mouth sits in there. The waiter shudders. "Is that all we've got?", he asks.

Gervase assures him that, once he's dressed it and applied his culinary skill, it will not only be a sight to behold but also delicious.

As the waiter exits, Gervase reaches into the tank, takes out the squid and places it on his board. As he prepares to do the necessary deed, the squid opens its eye and looks so innocently into Gervase's eyes that he feels it deep in his soul. He hesitates. "It's no good, I can't do it," he says, laying down his cleaver.

Hans looks over from the sink and says, "What do you mean, can't do it. Here, give it here, I'll do it."

Seizing the cleaver, Hans raises it to administer the coup-de-grace. The squid opens its eye and stares steadily at Hans. Right into his heart.

Trembling, Hans lowers the cleaver and burst out in tears. Sobbing, he gently lifts the squid and replaces it in the tank. Gervase consoles him.

So, what do we learn from this tale? Well, the waiter had to deal with a disappointed customer, and we now know that Hans who does dishes can be a soft as Gervase with vile, green, hairy-lipped squid.
