Recently I have been listening to an old portable radioshack FM/AM/LW/SW radio and, now want a new better portable/small receiver.
A pang of regret at having sold an eton portable with a external aerial socket some time ago.
I live in land 10m above sea level. what's the best portable radio with SW that can be used ? It needs good LW also.
Will it need a external antenna ?
Is a scanner any good or is that just for shot range stuff ?
I'm sure there's at least one radio ham with the knowledge here.

Sadly the age of the SW/LW/AM/FM portable radio is pretty much over, Sony used to make some great small portable sensitive radios but stopped production a while back. Hang onto the Radio Shack radio if it still works.
The included telescopic aerial is usually suitable in most locations.
A few possible candidates at a Amateur Radio shop I know but the mike makes are very expensive and not exactly portable.

If you put lw mw sw fm into the search box on eBay it returns quite a few hits. Whether they're all suitable or not I don't know.

Well, you are clearly on the internet so why not exploit internet radio? There are some great channels and services available and if you subscribe to ‘Roon’, they offer an international radio service with flac level quality. Roon, for instance offers all Radio Paradise channels at flac quality, so quite a high end source. Well worth it IMHO.

Thanks for the replies. The radio for me has to be a physical device with dials n switches, so that rules out internet stations. I like the old school analogue stuff.
My search will be for small handhelds that can pull in a better signal than my budget radioshack job. Although the days of radio are said to be over, there's still some interesting late night AM/SW/LW bits and pieces in many a language.

Grundig appear to offer several portable radios, I did a quick look on Amazon and found some but only you can decide if any are suitable.

Got a portable for less than a tenner at Tesco. It covers the same frequency bands as my old radioshack tuner. Because it's new the SW/LW reception is better, although a fine tune knob would be nice.
Looking online, there are loads of old and new portables which are all pretty much the same. Crazy prices just for the addition of things like SSB (single side band) and an external aerial socket and, air band capabilities. (had SSB on an Eton radio and it was nothing to write home about)
Some of the old sony portables with a fine tune knob look good. My search continues.

SSB is more about calling home than writing home!
