Re: Logic DM101 - a new beginning
Just cleaned an LP carefully with the Tonar Nostatic brush and it has turned what was, at first listen, a record in horrible state into something quite acceptable (for now).
Album in question is the superb 'Listen Now' by Phil Manzanera & 801.
And the really bad news is, I have just discovered that there is a small second-hand record shop in my local town centre.
Time for a visit.

Re: Logic DM101 - a new beginning
Found the record shop and am pleasantly surprised by the assortment, I can now cross a few titles off my 'wants' list.
All LPs are put through a cleaning machine before going on sale and I am now revelling in a pristine copy of 'The Snow Goose'.
Already have a list of what I want on the next visit.

Re: Logic DM101 - a new beginning
It has been (and still is) an exciting journey back into the world of analogue audio. The latest acquisition of a 'classic' Grado Signature MCZ cartridge is a new revelation. I never knew a turntable was capable of sounding like this!
The old Logic DM101 is still managing to surprise me and somehow I have cruelly underestimated its capabilities throughout the decades. Head firmly stuck up digital backside, I suppose.
The hiccup with the arm-lift bar on the Syrinx arm has been solved by removing the bar and using the lift mechanism as an arm-rest. Cueing by hand and using the rear-end of the arm to lift the cartridge at the end of an album side. No problemo.
The manic LP-acquisition frenzy is slowing now as I begin to accumulate many of the 'must-haves' and gradually start looking for the more difficult (expensive) items like early King Crimson. Still concentrating on the records that have left a lasting impression on me.
Picked up a newly-issued copy of John Coltrane's 'My Favourite Things' last week. This might get me heading down a Jazz rabbit-hole in the autumn: Thelonious, Blakey, Miles and so on.
I had been considering getting this old deck running again for years, was it such a good idea after all .... ?

Re: Logic DM101 - a new beginning
Glad to hear you are enjoying the turntable. A friend of mine who was a guru at restoring those first generation AR XA turntables was a strong advocate of those high performance MCZ Grado cartridges. It looks like you are doing quite well. In regards to record cleaning if you can jump the hurdle and get a ultra sonic tank you will be very satisfied with the records you run through it. The tanks are not terribly expensive, but try to find one with a separate power supply for the heater and the US devices, those seem to be better built but cost a bit more. The trick is how to turn the records while in the tank, and some crafty people use a BBQ rotisserie motor and DIY a holding system with pucks and o-rings to space and hold the records on a metal shaft in order to rotate them through the bath. If you can DIY that part you can have a top notch record cleaning system for not a ton of money.

Re: Logic DM101 - a new beginning
Thanks for that NK. I think I have been very lucky with the find of the Grado MCZ.
As for cleaning LPs, that is a whole new voyage of 'disc'overy and I'll be proceeding cautiously. Thanks also to all who had given advice on this.

Re: Logic DM101 - a new beginning
Considering trying out an Acrylic mat on the Logic, supposedly tightens up imaging and bass.
Wondering how that will work with the massive metal platter.
Anyone have any experience with these?
