NVA Amplifier "Space"

With the imminent build and arrival of my NVA 'Kit' my thoughts have turned to "Location", and more importantly where to sit the M300 so it doesn't overheat.

The turntable sits on a pretty solid 20mm limestone shelf which is supported on spikes held in angle iron, firmly attached to the wall, the Phono 1 will sit here as well.

Underneath the shelf I have some custom made record and CD Storage, and on top of this, under the limestone shelf sits my amplifier, CD Player, and Tuner. This is ideally where I would love to sit the P50 preamp and the S300 power amp (Losing the tuner ... who transmits in FM these days, even the BBC are turning it off!?). The concern is that even though I can give the required 300mm above and to the sides of the M300, the instructions say it should never be covered ... Does the shelf above it count as covering? Would siting it on the turntable shelf be a better option?

Probably a question for @savvypaul

30cm clearance to the shelf above will be absolutely fine.

Space ‘around’ the amp is very important- I found out the hard way during the heat wave in the summer- not a problem with the circuit itself just it’s cooling as it was in the same place for 2 years until the heat wave

Yea give the M300s as much space as you can, mine have their own space in a Kallax stand and don't have issue. Remember Richard saying years ago that NVA equip didn't like being all bunched together ..... give your kit some room to breath :)

There are a couple of different things being talked about - one is 'space around', one is 'space between'.

Space around, is important for ventilation. Space between is important to rule out any electrical interference from large toroidal transformers.

Narrow / shallow, tightly spaced 'specialist' hi-fi racks are the things to avoid, for both of the reasons above. They're also a bloody pain when setting up / taking apart a system.

Odd Question. Is there any reason why my Phono 1 can not be stood vertically on it's side? I did think heat dissipation, but then the "top" is facing into the room, and the Phono-1 doesn't get particularly warm in use anyway

I'm just trying to optimise cable length, and a bit of space for equipment, and possibly RF interference from the S300 Toroids ... not that I can hear any except on max volume. Having the toroids at 90 degrees to each other could have some sort of effect ... Need to have a listen

If you have no hum at your chosen listening levels, then you have no hum. You will hear some hum at maximum volume with any phono stage. We don't advise to store any NVA equipment on it's side for extended periods of time.

If still constructed the same way , the transformer is glued in place (class 2 construction ) putting it on its side will place the transformer under permanent stress .

I would counsel that is not a good idea.

Hemmo1969, have you ever tried placing your turntable well away from your speakers, such as behind where the photo was taken from?
And if so, did it make any sonic difference compared to where it's currently located?

That is contrary to the Doc's position on the BMU. He had not problem with it operating on it's side and it\s been that way for several years. have not detected and significant change. The only way putting it on its side would affect is if the stress exceeded the elastic limit of the materials concerned.
