Technics 1200 price increases

Unread post by savvypaul »

Before getting enthused about a new Lenco project, I was mulling over the idea of a new Technics 1210GR - £999 at Peter Tyson and Richer Sounds, £1299 elsewhere.

As of today (?) £1599, everywhere.

I believe they moved production from Japan to Malaysia, but you would think that would be a reduction in labour costs...don't see any changes to specs.

That's a shame. I kept lusting after a G model and they have gone up as well to nearly £4K

OT but Linn prices have gone up considerably and Naim have brought out a new range of electronics with truly eye watering price tags.

Where is this going to end ? I am effectively being priced out of buying anything.

I am seeing other price rises in the headphone sector, amplification rather than headphones themselves, but again, crazy increases.

Given the economic climate, I'm struggling to see how this makes sense. A percentage of the population always have money obviously, but once they've bought where are the other customers coming from?

The money that gets thrown around in the headphone space is just mad; guys over at Head-Fi queuing for a £7.5K HPA. £10K DACs. £5K for Susvara or every model that ZMF make for £3K a pair. It's a different world 😳

Part of it may be that manufacturers wait for a certain time each year to reflect any significant cost pressures in their pricing - rather than 'price creep' with 2 or 3 increases during the year.

With the Technics it could partly be that so many people describe it as the best value new T/T, and Technics then felt they could squeeze a bit more from it.

Squeeze my lemon til the juice runs down my leg.

Personally I'm sick of somebody always wanting to squeeze a bit more out of my lemon.

I guess there's two pricing models. The - 'how much do we need to charge to ensure we make our desired margin?' model, and the 'how much can we get away with charging when compared with the competition'? model.

Correct. Would you like to buy a fuse for £4200?
