My vintage Grado Signature MCX outputs at that level and is working fine with an NVA MM phono (80's model).

(Moving Iron not Moving Coil).

If you've got enough gain, use MM...

Unless you've got 2 , use what you have and decide .

I do have a mm & a mc Nva phono stage,
Using a passive pre the point Paul’s makes about gain suggests I use the Mc; with an active pre the mm can be used successfully. I thought it would be about compatibility than gain.
Currently mm with an active pre sounds good

When you use the passive pre with the mm stage, do you find yourself turning the passive pre up to max and it's still not loud enough?

If you turn it up to max and the volume is just right, connect the mm phono stage direct to the power amp.

If turning the passive pre up to max with the mm stage would be too loud, use that combination with your preferred volume.
Unless the active pre sounds better, which would suprise me - but you never know.

Richard used to go on about the load rejecting nature of his phono amps.
And he used to mention less is more from time to time.
