Moving magnet cartridge

Unread post by TheRealAleman »

Can anyone suggest an alternative cartridge to the Linn Adikt?

I've had two replacement stylii since getting the Adikt, and the second one, which is only 14 months old, is showing the same symptoms as the original. Basically it looks as though the stylus suspension has collapsed. No, I'm not that ham fisted, but I would expect slightly longer between replacements. 🤬🤬

To fit in a Linn Akito /3B.

Alternatively a Rega 10 with Factory fitted MC looks like a cost effective replacement 🤬

Would have loved that on my shortlist but at £799 it's stretching the budget quite a lot. It's pushing it into the realms of the Grado Timbre Master 3 (at £809 from Bax Music). The other thing that concerns me about the MP500 is the 3mV output ... I know it's just a few more clicks on the volume knob but ...

I may end up with a cut budget anyway down to the cost of a replacement stylus ... at £325 ... having had two carts / stylus fail with the same fault getting another Adikt stylus seems folly. The Sonata 3 seems like a good option. Possibly the Nagaoka MP-300

The MP200 is the sweet spot of the range, considered to have the best bang to buck ratio of the Nagoaka range.

It’s a great buy!

I added a wood body from Germany- not sure of the effect on sound but it wasn’t worse- also have a Stilton audio body for the mp range- old Skool hifi 😂

What a FCUKIN' brilliant suggestion!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Arrived this morning, had to wait for my Vinyl Source protractor to arrive to set it up ... Just stuck Yes 90125 on the platter ... Ok had to turn the volume up a few more notches than with the Adikt (3.0mV compared to the Adikts 6.5mv) ...

OH MY GOD

Bass taught, rythmical driving
Drums, that sound like drums
Treble soaring, and yet not bright or sibilant
Jon Andersons vocals, sublime, with clear separation from the harmony backing vocals

Sound stage opened up outside the room, instruments placed rock solid, easy to isolate a particular instrument, and yet the band is so together, and on it, so tight

Can't wait to put on Sad Old Red from Simply Red's picture book, which is normally my goto test track.

Cliché - It's like opening a window to the music.

Apparently it needs 30 hours to fully free up and work properly ... if that is the case it's going to be truly magical.

@TheMarlin ... Thank you so much for opening another level of my musical enjoyment
