The Tragically Hip 'Fully Completely' (1992)

Image

An act that has regularly blipped on my radar in the last years is Canada's The Tragically Hip, a band relatively unknown outside their own borders but massive in the home market - rather like Australia's Powderfinger. 'The Hip' enjoyed a 33-year run until charismatic frontman Gord Downie died in 2016.

Musically, their sound is guitar-based, with clear influences from blues, folk and alt-rock. Often compared to REM, not least due to the sometimes obscure and highly literate lyricism that the singers of both bands use. Me, I'm more reminded of the jagged, unexpected chords of 80's band 'Slovenly', themselves heavily influenced by The Fall. The Hip used a twin-guitar attack with lines that weave in and around themselves. Another direct comparison would be Powderfinger who also generate an authentic accessibility in their unassuming but powerful sound.

'Fully Completely' was the Tragically Hip's third proper album and gave them the breakthrough push into Canada's major league where they would become a fixture. A fine place to start an in-depth look at this group and a shipment of 2nd-hand CD's is winging its way over from Berlin to provide me with more.

Where's our pigeon camera?
By now he could be anywhere
And after all that training
It was something we could no longer contain.

R.E.M. 'Fables of the Reconstruction / Reconstruction of the Fables' (1985)

Image

For the sake of comparison to The Tragically Hip, I have been given a fresh listen to REM's first four albums - all of which I regard as Holy Ground and the highpoint being nr. 3 'Fables ...'.
Recorded in a gloomy London winter with the band feeling homesick for their Southern USA climate, producer Joe Boyd (Fairport Convention, Nick Drake) puts the melodic introspection setting on 'Full' and pulls out an amazing performance from a group that was still developing and finding its way.

Hard to make any meaningful comparisons between the two bands as they both exhibit their own unique character, but there are parallels to be drawn with intricate guitar lines and thought-provoking lyrics. Then I am drawn to the text from the song 'The Voice of Harold' which eerily describes the effect that listening to both of these bands has on me.

Chill bumps appear and I am frozen in the web they weave as they reveal their
Innermost selves with the outpouring of their hearts
On and on the songs roll and soon you are caught up
In the sermon in each rendition as you come to feel
The devotion and dedication that is poured forth
Suddenly, you know they are real, they mean it!

Praise the Lord.

Maybe not everyone's cup of tea, especially for a 2-tab listen . . .

Einstein On The Beach, 4-LP version
It really does test the whole system - if anything isn't right it can sound terribly messy, but get things set correctly and it is pretty darned incredible.

This follows some Althea & Donna, Syd Barret, Killing Joke Dub, and Nina Hagen (Unbehagen).

Just mixing it up a bit & confusing the neighbours.
