Many DAC's are unable to process DSD files and it needs relatively high-end processing to get any audible advantage from DSD over 24-bit FLAC.
What is your setup for PC & DAC ?

I didn't even think about the DAC, but if course Fretless is spot on as usual. My own DAC for example is limited to 192K. Excellent observation Fretless

Re: High Res Audio Files
Cheers George
Having problems with DSD playback myself, I am beginning to learn about the limitations of processors. My DAC will play DSD's up to a certain resolution - but the little netbook I use has trouble with the high-volume data stream that is needed.
This comparison set of formats is useful, as it gives you the chance to see what format/bit-rate/sampling speeds a system is most comfortable with. If the music comes over as 'edgy' or 'grainy' then the PC is probably struggling to keep up - if the sound is accurately relaxed then you know it is comfortable with that format.
Windows PC's are almost always doing something else internally all the time - so the processors are constantly busy with various tasks. A dedicated micro-computer, like a Pi, which does nothing else than process audio files will sound better (in general).
Hi-res audio, if done properly, should sound amazing. but be aware of your own installation's restrictions and just go for the best sound you can get.
Trust your ears.

Re: High Res Audio Files
My DAC if the Chord Mojo which will accept DSD. I would like to give it a try but am sceptical about the level of improvement over 24 Bit and 16 Bit. I think the main factor is the quality of the recording.

Looking at the Mojo specs I ran across this media player for Windows PC : http://www.hysolid.com/
It works with the Chord Mojo and processes DSD and FLAC files. Once installed on a computer it can then be controlled by a smartphone App - looks interesting - might give it a go myself.
AND it's free !
